The Sami Zoobi Exhibition honors the art and design work of Sami Zoobi, a UNCA alum (2018, Cum Laude) with a BA in New Media and a minor in Anthropology. Sami worked in Asheville as a graphic designer and printer after they graduated. They also edited videos and created illustrations, some of which are featured in this exhibition. Sami Zoobi died on September 27, 2024, during Hurricane Helene.

This exhibition @uncasheville_newmedia explores the craft of place for animation and interactive media. It features scale miniatures, sculpture, interactive installations, background design, illustration, and a selection of animated short films from more than fifteen regional and international artists.

Each of these works calls attention to process and asks the viewer to consider the role of materials in design.

This trip is CPOS-friendly (financial aid eligible) as both courses fulfill direct requirements in the major. This program is also 8 hours of credit for a 2-week program June 1-15 with the projects and writing for the course being turned in remotely later in the summer.

We will have a short information meeting tomorrow during the lunch hour w/pizza 12-12:30 pm in Owen 301.

Our Open Lab hours for the semester are now set! This semester, students have the opportunity for drop-in tutoring in the new media office with student employee Samaya. Participants in this year's faculty-led abroad program captured special moments throughout their journey across London, Paris, and Berlin. These students have created installations, digital and video collages, mixed media pieces, and animated works inspired by their travels and the challenge of encapsulating life experiences. We are celebrating their memories and hard work through our new exhibition titled "Morii". This show takes place on the third floor of Owen Hall in the New Media Gallery and is currently open to the public!

This project’s purpose is to give voice to Asians/Pacific Islanders in the UNC Asheville community and beyond, through an exploration and documentation of stories and experiences of Asian and/or Pacific Islander Heritage. Come hear their voices, learn about their experiences and support actions leading to greater inclusivity!

Asheville based artist and sound designer, Peter Speer will be a visiting UNCA to give a talk and act as a juror for this year’s New Media Student Exhibition. Peter’s work is inspired by everyday sounds, and explores this through paper based collage and voltage based soundscapes.

We are excited to present our first show curated by Alum Clara Tracey and Assistant Professor Mark Hursty, which represents work by alumni who graduated over the last decade, highlighting the breadth and quality of their artistic and commercial projects. In the exhibition there will be 3D models, 2D, 3D and stop motion animation, virtual reality projects, digital design and illustration and 3D print works.

Warm welcome to our two new instructors this semester! Forest Gamble is an animator, illustrator, comics artist, and documentary filmmaker. He earned a BA in New Media and German from UNC Asheville (2019) and a Master's in Stop-Motion Animation from the BAU, College of Arts and Design of Barcelona (2021). He is the co-director of the stop-motion short HEXED and the forthcoming hybrid animated short Chicken of the Woods. His work has been featured in Times Square, the Center for Craft, CERN, TEDx UNC Asheville, and over 40 international film festivals. He has worked on three award-winning feature films, creating animation for the recent Deep Astronomy and the Romantic Sciences (dir. Cory McAbee, 2022). He was a 2021 Maker-in-Residence at the UNC Asheville STEAM Studio in Asheville, NC, and a 2021-22 Artist-in-Residence at the Sequential Artist's Workshop in Gainesville, FL. His research interests include sustainable design for stop-motion animation, traditional craft of Appalachia, and mycology. He teaches video and animation courses in the New Media department at UNC Asheville.

Clara Tracey is a mystery writer, game designer, technical artist, and a recent graduate of Kingston University, London. An alumni of UNCA, she’s worked on AR, VR, and Mobile games. With one foot in the world of design and one in literature, working in real time engines comes about as naturally as shopping her first novel to publishers--meaning a lot of trial and error! Regardless, at the heart of Clara’s craft is a passion for interactive storytelling. She’s happy to return to UNCA as faculty, and even happier to hawk her cat, Bernkastel, to anyone on a zoom call.

With one foot in the world of design and one in literature, working in real time engines comes about as naturally as shopping her first novel to publishers--meaning a lot of trial and error! Regardless, at the heart of Clara’s craft is a passion for interactive storytelling. She’s happy to return to UNCA as faculty, and even happier to hawk her cat, Bernkastel, to anyone on a zoom call.
